Cape Town’s hip-hop scene took centre stage in the lineup for Red Bull Unlocked 2026, which returned to Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday, September 26. With A-Reece, Dee Koala, Sliqe and more among over 70 announced artists and DJs, the event brought together South African music, nightlife and urban culture across ten venues under one roof.

The annual event offered a different kind of nightlife experience. Rather than moving between clubs across the city, attendees could explore multiple music venues within the Cape Town Cruise Terminal using a single ticket.
For hip-hop fans, the lineup combined nationally recognised rappers with artists connected to Cape Town’s own music scene.

A-Reece was among the headline names announced for The Hub, the event’s central performance space. Known for his introspective lyricism, distinctive delivery and independent approach to music, the Pretoria-born rapper has established a substantial following in South African hip-hop.
His inclusion gave the Cape Town event a nationally recognised name whose music appeals to audiences beyond the city’s borders.
Sharing the announced lineup was Dee Koala, one of Cape Town’s prominent contemporary hip-hop artists. Her inclusion was particularly significant for a festival celebrating the Mother City’s nightlife and creative culture.
Dee Koala has developed a musical identity rooted in Cape Town, combining local influences, street culture and confident lyricism. Appearing alongside A-Reece and other established performers placed a Cape Town artist within a diverse national lineup.
Sliqe, DJ PH and Teddy Tumi were also included in The Hub’s announced programme, adding DJ culture and further variety to the hip-hop offering.

Ten Venues, One Massive Music Experience
The 2026 edition of Red Bull Unlocked brought together ten participating venues, five of which were returning from previous editions.
Broke, Fools Gold Social Bar, Souk, Destiny and Drama returned, while Texas, HALO, Beluga, Club Paradise and The Athletics Club & Social joined the experience for the first time.

Each venue contributed its own nightlife identity, giving the event a broad musical character. Hip-hop shared the programme with amapiano, Afro House, deep house, Afro Tech and R&B.
This format created opportunities for fans to discover music outside their usual preferences while exploring different sides of Cape Town’s nightlife.
The Hub’s announced lineup also included Oscar Mbo, Jullian Gomes, Babalwa M, Dwson and Chelsea Sloan, reflecting the event’s emphasis on multiple South African sounds rather than a single genre.
Cape Town’s Growing Place in South African Hip-Hop
For Cape Town’s hip-hop community, an event bringing together artists such as Dee Koala and A-Reece represents an opportunity for local and national music audiences to connect.
The city has a distinctive hip-hop history shaped by its neighbourhoods, languages and cultural communities. From the foundations established by pioneering groups to the contemporary generation of independent rappers, Cape Town has maintained its own identity within South African rap.
Events such as Red Bull Unlocked provide another platform through which that identity can reach audiences who also follow amapiano, house music and other popular genres.
Red Bull Unlocked first launched in Johannesburg in 2023 before expanding to Cape Town in 2024. Its return in 2026 continued the format of bringing different nightlife establishments together at one location.

Red Bull Unlocked’s biggest distinguishing feature was the scale of its musical offering.
The September 26 event was scheduled to run from 2 p.m. until 2 a.m., with more than 70 performers announced across the participating spaces. Its multi-venue concept gave attendees the freedom to move between different musical experiences throughout the event.
